Eragon tells the story of a young farm boy named Eragon and his dragon, Saphira.
In the beginning, Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the area near his home, and it turns out to be a dragon egg. After Saphira hatches for Eragon in the opening chapters, King Galbatorix sends his servants (including the Ra'zac, Urgals, and the shade Durza) after Eragon and Saphira, in an effort to capture or kill them. Eragon and Saphira flee their hometown of Carvahall, and embark on a number of adventures involving swordplay, magic, friendship, betrayal, and death.
Eragon was the third-best-selling children's hardback book of 2003,[1] the second-best-selling paperback of 2005,[2] and has placed on the New York Times Best Seller List for 121 (nonconsecutive) weeks.[3]
It was adapted into a feature film of the same name, released on December 15, 2006.

ERAGON (book 1)
Click the picture below to see the book.
Eragon lives with his uncle Garrow and cousin Roran on a farm on the outskirts of a small village called Carvahall. While hunting in the Spine, a large range of untamed mountains, Eragon is surprised to see a polished blue stone appear in front of him. He then returns to Carvahall to try to sell it to Sloan the town's butcher, in exchange for enough meat to feed his family for the winter. Sloan wants nothing to do with the "stone" because Eragon mentions he found it in the Spine, where Sloan's wife lost her life. A few days later, Eragon witnesses a baby dragon hatch from the "stone" as Eragon referred to it, and realizes that it is actually a dragon egg. Eragon touches the dragon and it leaves a burn on his hand. The next day the mark has turned a strange silver. After a talk with the town's elderly storyteller, Brom, Eragon names the dragon Saphira. While Eragon raises his dragon Saphira in secret Roran makes a shocking decision, he decides that he will work in a mill in Therinsford. Roran states that he will come back with the money to buy a house and then ask Katrina her hand in marriage. Eragon continues to raise Saphira in secret until two of King Galbatorix's servants, the Ra'zac, come to Carvahall looking for the egg. Eragon and Saphira manage to escape by hiding deep in the Spine, but Garrow is fatally wounded and the house and farm are burned down. Once Garrow dies, Eragon is left with no reason to stay in Carvahall, so he goes after the Ra'zac, seeking vengeance for the destruction of his home and his uncle's death. He is accompanied by Brom, who insists on helping him and Saphira.
Eragon becomes a Dragon Rider through his bond with Saphira. On the journey, Eragon learns sword fighting, magic, and the Ancient Language, and the ways of the Dragon Riders from Brom. Their travels bring them to Teirm , from where they are able to track the Ra'zac to the southern city of Dras-Leona. Before leaving Teirm, however, Eragon has his fortune told by the witch Angela, who warns him of the many dangers he will face.
Once in Dras-Leona, they manage to infiltrate the city, but Eragon later encounters the Ra'zac in a cathedral in the city, and is forced to flee. Though Brom and Eragon manage to escape, their camp is ambushed later that night. Although a stranger, Murtagh, rescues them, Brom is gravely injured and dies shortly after — but not before finally revealing to Eragon that he was a Dragon Rider, and that his dragon was also named Saphira.
Murtagh becomes Eragon's new companion. They then travel to Gil'ead, a city where they should be able to find information on how to find the Varden, a group of rebels who want to see the downfall of Galbatorix. While stopping near Gil'ead, Eragon is captured, drugged, and imprisoned in the same jail that holds a woman he has been receiving dreams about. When he breaks out of his cell, he discovers that she is an elf. Murtagh and Saphira stage a rescue and Eragon escapes with the unconscious elf. During the escape Eragon and Murtagh battle with a Shade - a sorcerer possessed by evil spirits - named Durza. Murtagh shoots Durza between the eyes with an arrow, and the Shade disappears in a cloud of mist.
After escaping, Eragon contacts the unconscious elf telepathically, and discovers that her name is Arya, She also tells them that she was poisoned while in captivity, and that only a potion in possession of the Varden can cure her. Arya is also able to give directions to the exact location of the Varden; a city called Tronjheim, which sits in the mountain, Farthen Dûr, hidden deep in the Beor Mountains. Eragon, Saphira, and Murtagh go in search of the Varden, both to save Arya's life, and to escape Galbatorix's wrath.
When they arrive in Farthen Dûr, Eragon is led to the leader of the Varden, Ajihad. In this meeting, he learns that Saphira's egg was under the care of Arya, until she was ambushed while transporting it. He is then told that the Shade Durza was not destroyed by Murtagh's well placed arrow, because the only way to kill a shade is with a stab through the heart. It is also revealed that Murtagh is the son of Morzan, the first and last of the Forsworn, the Dragon Riders who swore an oath of fealty to Galbatorix. Eragon also blesses a human child in the Ancient Language in Farthen Dur. Eragon is at last able to rest, although a new invasion is imminent: Galbatorix has discovered the location of the Varden, and plans to have his Urgal army destroy them. When the battle begins, the Varden and dwarves are pitted against an enormous army of Urgals. During the battle, Eragon faces Durza again, but fails in battle against him. Durza is about to capture Eragon when Saphira and Arya break Isidar Mithrim, the Star Sapphire, diverting the Shade's attention long enough for Eragon to stab him in the heart, after which, Eragon blacks out. After Durza's death, the Urgals are released from a spell which had been placed on them and begin to fight among themselves; the Varden take advantage of this opportunity, and the battle turns in their favor. During Eragon's unconsciousness, a stranger calling himself 'The Cripple Who is Whole' contacts him telepathically and informs him that he needs to further his training in Ellesméra, the elven capital city. He awakes to find Angela, the witch from Teirm, tending to him. He then realizes that he has a long, painful scar where Durza slashed his back. The story ends with Eragon promising the presence in his mind that he will find him and continue to train.

ELDEST (book 2)

The first events in this book are the attack on Ajihad's life, his death and funeral, the disappearance of Murtagh and The Twins, who are captured by Urgals and assumed dead, and the election of a new leader of the Varden - Nasuada, Ajihad's daughter, to whom Eragon swears fealty following some internal politics among the Varden's Council of Elders.
Meanwhile, in Carvahall, Roran is being pursued by Galbatorix, who has sent the Ra'zac and a unit of Imperial soldiers to capture him and thus lure Eragon out. After repelling many attacks, the town manages to drive the army away, but Katrina, Roran's fiancée, is captured by the Ra'zac. They decide to leave Carvahall and travel to Surda. Roran earns the name "Stronghammer" because he defended Carvahall with a hammer given to him by Horst.
By that time, Eragon has decided to go to Du Weldenvarden to further pursue his training. After many adventures on the way, Eragon comes to his destination and meets Islanzadí, the elven queen. It is revealed that Arya is Islanzadí's daughter. Eragon is introduced to another Dragon Rider, Oromis; the Mourning Sage or Osthato Chetowa: The Cripple Who Is Whole, Togira Ikonoka; who shielded Eragon in the first book. Eragon and Saphira begin their training with Oromis and his dragon Glaedr. Eragon learns how to read and fluently speak the Ancient Language, as well to use various magic skills. While Eragon's feelings for Arya increase, he continues to train under Oromis' wing and suffers repeated bouts of pain from the scar on his back Durza, the Shade formerly known as Carsaib, gave him. Nevertheless, he and Saphira grow steadily more powerful, but he is held back immensely by the pain from his scar. On a traditional elvish celebration day of the pact with the dragons, called the Blood-Oath Celebration, or Agaetí Blödhren in the ancient language, Eragon is healed of his wound and, as an unprecedented gift from the dragons, gains elvish qualities that enhance his strength and agility.
Nasuada has made a momentous decision and moved the Varden to Surda. Here, she learns that the blessing Eragon bestowed on the child in Eragon was worded wrongly due to his lack of basic knowledge of the Ancient Language at the time, becoming a curse of sorts. Eragon too is horrified when he hears of this, and promises to try and nullify it. In the meantime the girl, Elva, serves as a sort of bodyguard to Nasuada against Galbatorix's assassins, the Black Hand, who are discovered in the Varden.
Because Nasuada moved the Varden, the threat of war with Galbatorix seems imminent. Upon hearing of this, Eragon immediately leaves for the battle in Surda and finds the situation poised on the edge of battle. The armies of the Varden, together with the army of Surda, camp on a plain opposite the vast armies of Galbatorix. Meanwhile, Roran and his men take command of the new Empire ship, the Dragon Wing, and arrive in time in Surda.
The battle begins, and Eragon is able to repel the opposing armies for some time with his new training, but the tide soon turns. During the fighting, Roran arrives at Surda, and his group of villagers join themselves to the forces of the Varden. Then, with the appearance of the dwarves from the east, the situation changes again, until an unknown Dragon Rider appears and kills Hrothgar, the dwarf king. Also at the same time, Eragon feels two new, powerful spell casters arrive on the field of battle and recognizes them for the Twins, thought dead. The Twins systematically start killing off the Varden's group of magicians and sorcerers.
Eragon faces off with the unknown rider in both aerial and ground fights and ultimately unmasks his opponent, revealing Murtagh. Murtagh tells Eragon that the Twins had betrayed the Varden and taken him to Galbatorix. Galbatorix made Murtagh and Thorn, his red dragon, swear fealty in the ancient language. Galbatorix knows the true names of both Murtagh and his dragon, and thus is able to control them. One of the two remaining dragon eggs has finally hatched which was eagerly awaited by Galbatorix for a long time. Murtagh also reveals that Galbatorix is working to save the dragon race by capturing Saphira and having her mate with one of the two remaining dragon, one still lying dormant in its egg, and the other having hatched for Murtagh. Murtagh says that Saphira holds the key to a new era, because she is the only female dragon left. He and Thorn prove to be more powerful than the battle-weary Eragon and Saphira, while Murtagh displays the great and terrible potency of his magic powers, using spells that would have killed a normal human. Together, they watch Eragon's cousin, Roran, kill the Twins. Murtagh decides to have mercy on Eragon and Saphira, but before leaving them, he reveals that Eragon was the youngest son of Morzan and Selena, and that therefore Murtagh is Eragon's elder brother. Murtagh takes Zar'roc, Eragon's sword, away from Eragon, saying it should rightfully have been his, as he is the eldest son of Morzan. Eragon decides that even though Morzan may be his parent, Garrow was his father and Roran is more of a brother than Murtagh. In the meantime, Galbatorix's army is forced to retreat after the arrival of the Dwarves, the death of the Twins, and the leaving of Murtagh. In the end, Eragon and Roran decide that they will seek out Katrina together.

Eragon, Roran, and Saphira are traveling towards Helgrind, the dwelling place of the Ra'zac, where Roran's betrothed, Katrina, is being held prisoner. Eragon mends the wound that was inflicted on Roran by a Ra'zac in Carvahall as they are camping. Together they infiltrate the fortress and are ambushed by the Ra'zac. Eragon kills one of the Ra'zac while the other manages to escape into the depths of Helgrind. Roran rescues Katrina while Eragon finds Sloan, Katrina's father and a traitor to Carvahall, imprisoned. Eragon decides to remain in Helgrind to kill the remaining Ra’zac and deal with Sloan. He tells Saphira to go back to the Varden with Roran and Katrina, which she does. Eragon finds and kills the last Ra'zac with ease. Eragon then leaves Helgrind with Sloan and, using Sloan's true name, commands him to travel towards the elves' domain, and Eragon heads back to the Varden. Meanwhile, Saphira arrives at the Varden's camp without Eragon, so Arya sets off in pursuit of him. Arya finds Eragon traveling south in Eastcroft, and they escape to the Varden together. At the Varden's camp, Eragon fixes the curse he accidentally set upon Elva, but only partially; she can still sense the pains around her, but can choose to avoid them. He also pays his debt to Gedric, from whom he stole hides for Saphira's saddle, and he then visits Jeod and gives his wife a gift as well.
Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn, attack the Varden shortly after Eragon’s return, with a unit of soldiers. Elven spell casters aid Eragon, forcing Murtagh and Thorn to flee. After the fight, Eragon binds Roran and Katrina together in marriage. Then Nasuada orders Eragon to attend the election of the new dwarf king, insisting Saphira stay behind, which Eragon reluctantly agrees to. Among the dwarves, Eragon is reunited with Orik, the clan chief of Durgrimst Ingeitum. An attempt to kill Eragon is found to be the work of the clan Az Sweldin rak Anhuin, who are hostile toward Eragon. Orik presents evidence to the clan-chiefs, who banish the Az Sweldn rak Anhuin clan into exile. Having won the trust of the dwarves, Orik is elected the new dwarf king. At Orik's coronation, Saphira mends Isidar Mithrim, which Arya had shattered while rescuing Eragon from the Shade, Durza.
Eragon and Saphira decide to return to Ellesméra to continue their training. Eragon is told by Oromis and Glaedr that Morzan is not his father; and that Brom is. The next day, Eragon is told the source of Galbatorix's power; an Eldunarí, or a heart of hearts, is a dragon's heart, which contains their consciousness and exists forever. Glaedr explains that Galbatorix controls hundreds of these, which are the source of his power. They discuss Eragon's need for a new sword as well. Eragon visits Rhunön, the elven blacksmith, whom he asks to forge a new blade for him. She agrees, only after he retrieves the material needed, brightsteel (which he finds under the Menoa Tree and asks it for the metal, thus making Solembum's prediction true), and Eragon names the sword "Brisingr". When Eragon sets off to return to the Varden, he finds that Oromis and Glaedr are departing as well. Oromis explains that the time has come to oppose Galbatorix alongside Islanzadí. Glaedr gives his Eldunarí to Eragon and Saphira before they part.
Eragon and Saphira return to the Varden, who are engaging in a siege of the city of Feinster, and are reunited with Arya. Eragon and Arya find the leader of the city, Lady Lorana, but discover that her three magicians are attempting to create a Shade. Eragon and Arya race to kill the magicians, as they transform a man into a Shade. Eragon passes out as Glaedr's Eldunarí depicts Oromis and Murtagh fighting, as Oromis suffers a seizure and Galbatorix kills him. Eragon watches as Glaedr is killed by Thorn afterwards. As Eragon regains consciousness, he and Arya fight the Shade, Varaug, who falls to the duo when Arya stabs him in the heart. After the successful siege, Nasuada informs Eragon that the Varden plan to march to Belatona, then to Dras-Leona, then to Uru'baen, where they plan to kill Galbatorix.
